Here’s a question worth sitting with: when was the last time you got to build a medical device from a genuinely blank page?
Not a refresh. Not a version two. An entirely new platform, from zero, with the budget and the backing to see it through.
That’s the brief on offer a successful a Melbourne medtech business bringing its next-generation device to life from the ground up. This is a rare one: a fully funded, board-approved, multi-year R&D program, and a Senior Systems Engineer role built to lead the systems architecture for it from day one through to commercialisation.
You’ll also help steer the final stretch of the R&D project alongside the team, before shifting your full focus to the new platform.
What you’ll be doing
- Owning systems architecture for a next-generation medical device, from concept through to production handover.
- Mentoring and guiding a junior systems engineer.
- Working closely with a small, close-knit R&D team, mechanical, electrical and production, to keep everyone building toward the same architecture.
- Partnering directly with the Head of R&D as a trusted technical sounding board.
- Helping raise the bar on documentation and engineering rigour as the team scales.
- Class 3 medical device experience, essential.
- Hands-on FDA submission experience, essential.
- A background in medical devices, essential.
- C++ experience, desirable.
- Embedded software exposure, highly regarded but not essential.
- The confidence to influence engineers you don’t manage, and the patience to bring people with you.
- You’re based in Melbourne now, and genuinely want to be here on-site with the team.
- Ground-up ownership: this is a true zero-to-one systems engineering brief, not maintenance on someone else’s design. Only Permanent Residents or Australian Citizens are eligible to apply.
