WRITING YOUR CV & COVER LETTER
Your CV and cover letter are your first chance to make an impression on a prospective employer. If you don’t make the most of it you may not get a second chance. Make the most of the opportunity.
Personal Information
- Be sure to include a daytime phone number and your full address;
- Include your full name and the page number on the Header or Footer of each page
- Don't include a photo of yourself;
- Don't include personal comments about yourself that aren't work related. For example, whether you are married or how many children you have.
Length
- Should be proportional to work experience i.e. graduates 1-2 pages, experienced candidates 5 pages maximum;
- Bear your reader in mind; make it visually appealing and easy to read;
- Use bullet points and avoid longwinded paragraphs.
Work Experience
- Detail your most recent positions first;
- Include your dates of employment, employers name and company overview, position title, key responsibilities and key achievements;
- Give greater emphasis to the more recent and relevant roles;
- Put your publication list last or leave out all together.
Proof Read
- Use your Spell Check but also print out and proof read your application before submitting;
- Ask yourself how will your CV rate if the reader is reviewing another 30 resumes concurrently?
